Die Pro by Leon de Villiers is a popular Afrikaans youth novel studied by many South African learners. The story is emotional and inspiring — it focuses on friendship, loss, and personal growth. Tiaan Nothnagel (main character) lose his best friend Dirkie Lawrence due to a surfing freak accident during the December, Grade 10 year.

This free board game aims to serve as an innovative tool, to allow students to have a fun in class/lessons. Incorporating fun games and fun activities in lessons allow students to learn in a fun and interactive way. Through interactive methods students participation increases and they enjoy being able to have fun while learning.

Most students are competitive, and putting a game in front of them allow students to engage better in lessons.

Board game description

The free board game includes a “start” point and an “end” point. Students need to move through each box on the board game until they reach the end point. However each box contains a question from the Die Pro by Leon de Villiers book. These questions serves as revision questions to test the students knowledge and understanding on the Die Pro by Leon de Villiers book. The concept of the free board game is similar to the snakes and letter Board game.

Board game instructions

  1. On your turn, roll the dice.. Move forward the number of spaces shown on the dice.
  2. The block you land on contains a question,. You must try to answer it. If you answer correctly, stay on that block.
  3. If you answer incorrectly, move your token back to the block you came from prior to your roll.
  4. If you land on a block without a question, stay there without penalty.

Resources

To play this game you will need a six sided dye and tokens from a snakes and ladder game. If you don’t have access to tokens. You may also use the print version I have made, which includes makeshift tokens of different colours for each of your students.

Answering of questions within the board game

It is advice that you encourage your students to answer the questions in Afrikaans and to avoid adding English in their answers. Answering in Afrikaans allow students to practise their vocab in Afrikaans and to see if they interpreting the questions correctly. Remember the more you get your students to only answer in Afrikaans, the better it is for practice. Examiners do not mark English answers. So if they unable to put their answers in Afrikaans it means they will loose marks during assessments and exams.

Feel free to add more questions or to add more game rules in any form or way. However keep in mind this free board game must serve as a tool to revise your students knowledge on Die pro or any other set work book you wish revise with your students.
